Ergonomic Advice

Ergonomic Advice — Vivacare Advanced Physiotherapy

For any healthy and well functioning individual at workplace, it is very important that his/her body is well adapted to the workplace. Something as simple as a bad office posture can lead to a lot of pain & musculoskeletal disorders over time. These disorders can affect the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. Ergonomic advice guides one with the demands imposed on an individual’s body at the workplace and how to cope with it.

At Vivacare Advanced Physiotherapy & Pain Clinic, our physiotherapists will do a detailed assessment of your physical function and how your body interacts with your work environment. You will be given advice on:

  • Correct trunk posture that can improve your spine, head and neck alignment that results in less fatigue when sitting at a desk for prolonged periods of time. Often a simple product will assist you in correct positioning & good office posture.
  • How to hold your body or correctly perform the tasks that pose a risk of workplace injury.
  • What you can do to improve how your body copes with your working activities.
  • Simple stretches that deal with tight muscles.
  • Strengthening exercises to improve the endurance of the muscles that are struggling while working.
  • Eyesight ergonomics.
  • Chairs with proper back support.
  • Ergonomics of your work station.

Repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow, have also been attributed to excessive use of a computer. Typically, these pain syndromes are often triggered by specific movements done repeatedly without giving adequate rest to the affected joint.

When to See a Physiotherapist

Recurring discomfort at the same point in your workday — neck, wrists, lower back — is a signal your workstation setup or habits need review, ideally before it develops into a diagnosable overuse injury.

Prevention & Self-Care Tips

  • Position your screen so the top sits at or just below eye level, roughly an arm’s length away.
  • Keep your wrists neutral while typing, with elbows close to your body at roughly 90 degrees.
  • Take a movement break at least every 45–60 minutes, even if it’s just standing and stretching.
  • Support your lower back with proper lumbar support while seated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a standing desk automatically better than sitting?

Not necessarily on its own — the key is alternating positions and avoiding any single sustained posture for too long, whether sitting or standing.

Can ergonomic changes really prevent injuries like carpal tunnel or tennis elbow?

Yes, in combination with good habits — many repetitive strain injuries are directly linked to prolonged poor positioning, so correcting the setup removes a major contributing factor.

How often should I get my workstation reassessed?

It’s worth reviewing whenever your role, equipment, or symptoms change — otherwise an annual check-in is a reasonable habit for most desk-based workers.

Can ergonomic advice help with pain I already have, not just prevention?

Yes — correcting an aggravating setup is often an essential part of resolving existing pain, alongside hands-on treatment, since ongoing poor positioning can keep undoing your progress.

Do laptop users need different advice than desktop users?

Yes — laptops force a compromise between screen height and keyboard position, so an external keyboard, mouse, and stand are usually recommended to correct this.
